In REDE, language recordings of the modern regional languages of German are integrated, linked with other existing data classes - map data from language atlas projects and others, georeferenced bibliographic information, socio-demographic or historical-administrative and political interpretation tools (including the fully digitized Wenkerbogen) - and made available to REDE users for systematic comparative analyses.

The data sets can be viewed via the audio catalog or via the voice recording search in REDE SprachGIS.

The audio recordings available in REDE concern

a) Sound recordings as part of the REDE-Neuerhebung,

b) further audio recordings of the Wenkersätze and

c) sound recordings made using questionnaires in various Sprachatlasprojekten in German-speaking countries.

For a period of time, the project was carried out under the names “Kleiner Deutscher Lautalas – Phonetik” and “Phonetischer Atlas der Bundesrepublik Deutschland”. After the collection was expanded in the 1990’s (with the new Federal States), the title was changed to PAD.

The collection of data originally began under Werner Veith. After he moved to Mainz, Joachim Göschel and Angelika Braun continued the project. There are narrow phonetic transcriptions for all recordings.

John Nerbonne (University of Groningen) and Hermann Niebaum (University of Groningen) had the transcriptions translated into the digital format X-Sampa. This was followed by a digital analysis of the data.

Notes:

The recordings were collected based on the model provided by “Tonaufnahmen der hessichen Mundarten” (TAHM). It is heterogenous in terms of the acoustic quality and linguistic realization because of the kind of collection, the age range, and varying dialect competence. However, the fine survey net and the multiple recordings from individual places offset this.

c) Tonaufnahmen aus Sprachatlasprojekten (basierend auf Fragebüchern)

In addition to recordings of Wenker sentences, the REDE SprachGIS offers numerous audio recordings created for various linguistic atlases. To this end, linguistic fieldworkers interviewed and recorded informants using a question catalogue. The recordings were then aligned by staff members or they were aligned after the fact by REDE staff members. This was done so as to ensure that every phenomenon in the question catalogue contained could be searched individually.

Audio recordings are available for the following collections via the REDE SprachGIS:
